They will win in battle against ashigarus, but lose to any of the samurai units. Yari Samurai: Yari Samurai are used to kill cavalry, if you dont want to kill cavalry with them, then do not take them to battle because they are not highly skilled in combat. Try to create a situation where they are at least two of the following: outnumbered, outskilled, fired upon, exposed to your cavalry.
#Total war shogun 2 guide how to
Not much advise I can give about how to deal with them. Fear this unit and make sure you take it out. I have seen miracles done by buffed veteran katana samurai. If the enemy has the basic unit and I have for example the Sword Instructor retainer (+2 melee attack) for my samurai will defeat my opponent's samurai. Usually I use katana samurai to counter katana samurai. They are very tough to take out and do not have a definitive counter. They can get flanked and stay strong for a long time. They can take a ton of arrows and still reach their target. They can withstand cavalry charges and win the engagement. Katana Samurai: Katana Samurai is an effective combatant in any situation. I would not use loan swords with no retainers for them. If you field all of these retainers, you get 33% better melee attack, 50% better armor, 20% better morale and 10% discount! Basically, now for the cost of 2x360 koku, you can safely take katana samurai on with loan ashigaru! Remember, loan swords have more men in one unit than katana samurai (750 koku). Inspiring Orator gives 10% discount on all ashigaru units. Straw Practise Dummy gives +1 melee attack. I've mostly used these units heavily buffed by retainers. The strategies linked to them are unlike their yari-armed brothers. Loan Sword Ashigaru: Unlike Yari Ashigaru, Loan Sword Ashigaru is better at attacking, than in defending. Losses on your side will be very few if any. If you have available Light Cavalry or Yari Cavalry, try to take as many of these archers as possible. (depending on unit size) If this unit is not equipped with any retainers and is not a level 5 or higher veteran, any cavalry unit will defeat it in battle. Also they are dirt cheap and your opponent will have to waste arrows and time to kill all 160 men of that unit. Having five million arrows shot your enemy's way means at least 100 will hit.

What I advise for is using them in sieges.

Most of the unit will also win in a ranged fight with them too! I advise against taking these troops in field battles, as there are far too many ways to defeat them and too few scenarios have they done me any favors. I think any other unit will defeat them in a melee fight. I highly recommend playing with this in custom battles to learn how to position them just right, so that you increase your chances of witnessing option 2.īow Ashigaru: Bow Ashigaru are best, when kept at range. I have seen a moving (and attacking) yari wall defeat several katana samurai units getting 300+ kills. Option two is they annihilate their target. Option one is they reach their target and start spinning or completely change the direction of their wall, which will lose you this engagement. If you order them to attack another unit, one of two things will happen. When in yari wall formation, the ashigaru can still move around slowly. The second piece of advice I wanted to share is quite risky. Some of the charging horsemen die instantly on impact without any animations. You probably think you know how powerful they are, but I suggest you make a custom battle and see for yourself. One thing that I have found VERY effective is stopping cavalry charges. Now here is some advice on how to use ashigaru at their best. The threat is the enemy's archers and gunmen. The opportunity is to use the time bought with the wall to use your ranged units and take out high-value targets while spending the cheap ashigaru unit. This can create an opportunity and a threat. Breaking through it is significantly slower when compared to the unit being in its normal stance. The ability "Yari Wall", depending on its thickness, can stop a formidable force of elite melee infantry. Yari Ashigaru are best used when defending a choke-point or a line with other units. Yari Ashigaru: The go-to unit for defense.
